Bower’s Traditional Norfolk Pork Sausage

Jan 25th, 2010 | By Sausage King | Category: News, Pictures, Reviews

A sausage fan in Kings Lynn has been out and about rating the best sausages for his blog here.  Read what he thought of local butcher Bowers below.  He clearly enjoyed sampling some of Norfolk’s finest.  Maybe I should make Bowers a destination for The Sausage King Adventures?

Bowers’ is a small traditional butcher shop, which can be found on Gaywood Road in King’s Lynn, close to the famous Gaywood clock tower. You will always be afforded a warm welcome here, and the smell of the shop will tickle your tastebuds before you’ve even bought your meat. There is often a queue in Bowers’ which will allow you time to peruse the black and white photographs of Victorian King’s Lynn which cover the walls.

I’ve chosen Bowers’ Traditional Norfolk Pork Sausages as the first banger to go under the microscope and into the frying pan for three reasons:

  1. Bower’s is the closest butcher my home here in Norfolk,
  2. The “default” sausage we’ll be trying will be of the pork variety, and therefore,
  3. A Norfolk, pork, sausage has to be the starting point.

Meat Content: No “official” figure from the butcher, but this sausage is Very Meaty. You need to bite into it, which marks it out as a solid piece of dead pig!

Flavour: Delicious! There is a major amount of pork in this sausage, and it is backed up with a spicy additions from the maker. It’s the first sausage to be tested at 2-Sox Towers, and it’s an extremely tasty one. Lovely and porky, and flavoured just so, this is a very good sausage.

Texture: Slicing through a banger and seeing what happens helps define its quality. A cross section of this beauty shows a high proportion of meat and very little filler. When you put a slice in your mouth it tastes like almost solid meat - this may be a defining factor in future tests. Stands the test of Six Piece Slicing without crumbling.

Shrinkage: Average weight uncooked - 77g, Average weight cooked - 59g, Shrinkage - 23%

Value For Money: These sausages cost £6.60 per kg. As these are large bangers, that works out at 51p each. The excellent flavour makes these sausages Well Worth Every Penny.

Sausage King’s note: I hope you enjoyed this review as much as I did although I am pretty hungry now!  If you like this review check out the Rate My Sausage website to see more.  If you think I should definitely include Bowers on my motorbike powered adventures get in touch and let me know.

  1. As my husband works at bowers as one of there butchers you will no doubt think i am biased, well proberly yes but not for the reasons you think!!! Its because at bowers they will do all they can to accomadate you and get what you want if they do not have it to hand. They are a old established butchers and people come from far and wide for there meat. It is good clean well prepared and good priced meat. They also make fresh pies, sausage rolls, and cornish pastys all on the premises, and again all are very tasty and well priced. So i would say a big YES that you do encluded this very fine traditinal butchers in your Moterbike Powered Adventure. I would also say that we need to keep these fine butchers as they are being pushed out by the big supermarkets who have no rapour with there customers on a day to day basis, unlike bowers who have customers whos familys have been dealing with them for years, and who like and trust there products as well as there honesty in there dealing with there customers!! Good on you Bowers!!!

  2. The whole family enjoy Bower’s sausages for all occasions, grilling, bbq, toad in the hole or sausage and mash. A winner all round for flavour and meat content. The sausage meat produces wonderful homemade sausage rolls, but if you need to cheat, sausage rolls are available in the shop.
The service and quality are second to none and are highly recommended. Thank you Bowers Butchers.

  3. To be able to tell anyone who will listen how good Bowers sausages are is an opportunity I could not miss, this
butcher is of the highest standard and my husband and I can’t praise them enough. For a butcher to be able to tell his customers where all his meat comes from and to maintain the high standards that they do is admirable in this age of supermarkets, to go in there and be greeted by name and to be told that something that we particularly like is in makes us feel valued. Richard, Adrien and Terry offer the highest service and products for miles around and long may it continue

  4. I travel to Bowers butchers from Cambridge. I can highly recommend the traditional Norfolk sausages. I run my own business in Cambridge and have told many customers about the delicious produce and am frequently asked to obtain bags of sausages on my next visit to Bowers to bring back. It has become a regular part of life now and I can honestly say that I have never tasted or enjoyed a British banger as much as those from Bowers Butchers. I would not purchase my sausages from anywhere else. Keep up the good work Dickie and team it is good to see such a successful independent business in this day and age and with such a wide variety of produce available. Well done!
